Overview of BUCT

    Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT) is a high-level university that aims to develop chemical talent at the cutting-edge of science and technology. The university was established in 1958 and formerly known as the Beijing Institute of Chemical Technology. As a national key university directly affiliated to the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, and as one of the Project 211 universities and 985 Project Innovation Platforms, BUCT has responsibilities for basic and applied scientific research; original, high-tech development; and the training of high-level, innovative talent.

 

    With half a century of history, BUCT has become a multi-disciplinary university with a solid foundation in science and engineering, as well as other distinctive disciplines such as management, economics, law, literature, education, philosophy, medical sciences. The university is a multi-level training system for undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and students from foreign countries. Since its establishment, BUCT has trained more than 100,000 people for China.

 

    BUCT has a total of 14 colleges with 15,249 full-time undergraduate students; 6,303 full-time graduate students (including 804 PhD students); and 460 international students. The university also has 4,096 continuing education students, including those in higher vocational education, the correspondence university, and the night university. 

 

    BUCT has 2,354 faculty members, including 1,093 full-time teachers; 771 are full or associate professors. Faculty members include: 11 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one National Outstanding Professional and Technical Talent; 7 experts from the National Thousand Talents Program; 8 Chief Scientists in the 973 National Program; 24 winners of “the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars”; 7 winners of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund; 2 winners of the Chinese Young Women Scientist Award; 11 Distinguished Professors and 2 Chair Professors from the Cheung Kong Scholars Program of the Ministry of Education; 2 Young Scholars from the Cheung Kong Scholars Program of the Ministry of Education, 71 from the Cross-Century Talent Program of the Ministry of Education.

 

    BUCT has 14 colleges; 51 undergraduate subjects; 96 master’s degree programs; 5 professional master’s degree categories; 10 master’s degree programs in engineering fields;  7 primary discipline doctoral programs; 28 secondary discipline doctoral programs; 7 Postdoctoral Mobile Stations; one National Key Discipline (covering 5 Secondary Disciplines); 2 National Secondary Key Disciplines; one National Key (Training) Discipline; 3 Beijing Primary Key Disciplines (covering 14 Secondary Key Disciplines); 2 Beijing Key Interdisciplinary Programs; 3 Beijing Secondary Key Disciplines; 8 National Feature Subject Construction Sites; 16 Beijing Feature Subject Construction Sites; 3 Engineering Education Subjects certified by the Ministry of Education; 2 National Key Laboratories; one National Engineering Technology Research Center; one National Engineering Laboratory; 12 laboratories at the provincial and ministerial level; 15 Engineering Technology Research Centers at the provincial and ministerial level.

 

    BUCT has been actively carrying out teaching reforms, which have comprehensively improved the quality of the education and teaching at the university. BUCT currently has 12 National College Student Off-Campus Practical Teaching Bases, 2 National Laboratory Teaching Model Centers, one National Training Mode Innovative Experimental Area, 3 National Virtual Simulation Teaching Experimental Centers, one Beijing Municipal Culture-Oriented Quality-Education Base, one Beijing Municipal Research Base of Philosophy and Social Sciences, 7 Beijing Municipal Laboratory Teaching Model Centers, 5 Beijing Municipal Off-Campus Personnel Training Bases, 5 National College Outstanding Teachers, 25 Beijing Municipal Outstanding College Teachers, 5 National Teaching Teams, 10 Beijing Municipal Excellent Education Teams,15 National Excellent Courses, 15 National Resources Sharing Classes, 37 Beijing Municipal Excellent Courses, and 5 Provincial and Ministerial Bilingual Model Courses.

 

    Scientific research at BUCT has developed rapidly. This has enhanced the university’s capability to undertake major projects and solve significant problems for China’s economic and social development. Funding for science and technology continues to reach record highs. BUCT"s per capita research funding is at the top level among Chinese universities. Since 2001, twenty-six scientific research projects of BUCT have won the National Technology Award. BUCT has 3 innovative research groups of the National Natural Science Foundation, and 6 innovation teams of the Cheung Kong Scholar Program from the Ministry of Education. BUCT thus ranks at the forefront of Chinese colleges and universities. In 2016, BUCT received nearly 727 million yuan RMB in funding for research in science and technology, won 7 science and technology awards at the provincial and ministerial levels, and obtained 335 patents.

 

    BUCT has been committed to industrialization and the transformation of high-tech achievements, and has qualified as a "National University Science and Technology Park." The science and technology industry of BUCT has more than 20 science and technology industrial entities, which are closely integrated with teaching and scientific research at the university. BUCT’s high-tech industries rely on the university’s advantages in science, technology and talent and strive for the industrialization of scientific and technological achievements. High-tech industries that have the characteristics of BUCT have been established, and they have produced a variety of technologies and products in biochemical engineering, household chemical engineering, fine chemical engineering, new chemical materials, and other fields. In recent years, BUCT has also cooperated with local governments and has focused on setting up local institutes of science and technology in advanced materials, industrial biotechnology and other fields in the Pearl River Delta, the Yangtze River Delta and the Bohai Rim regions.

 

    BUCT gives much attention to international academic, cultural, and educational exchanges. The university has established academic cooperation with 107 universities, including those from the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Germany, Australia, the Republic of Korea, and Japan. BUCT now cooperates with more than 30 foreign institutions and has started more than 40 overseas study programs for students, including student exchange  programs, joint training programs, degree programs overseas summer camps, overseas internships, and international conferences and competitions. 285 students enrolled in these programs in 2016. BUCT has also opened multi-level educational opportunities for foreign students, including language students, undergraduates, graduate students, and doctoral students. In 2016, BUCT had 460 international degree students. BUCT has a number of high-level international cooperative projects, such as the "Overseas Expertise Introduction Project for Discipline Innovation" (referred to as "111 Project"), the "Overseas Higher Cultural and Educational Experts Introduction Project", the "High-end Foreign Experts Project ", and the "Overseas Top Teacher Project". These have gradually led BUCT’s research teams to the cutting-edge of technological advancement.

 

    BUCT pays close attention to the employment of its students and graduates. Helping students find suitable employment is one of the four key tasks of BUCT, and the university puts much effort into this responsibility. BUCT has a well-developed, comprehensive system of guidance and service regarding all aspects of employment. This has provided an effective, two-way selection process for both graduates and employers. The first-time employment rate of BUCT graduates has ranked top among Chinese colleges and universities over the years. In 2015, the employment rate of undergraduates was 98.48%, and the overall employment rate of postgraduates was 96.83%.
